Participou das bandas "Denver Mule" e "Skyliners" entre 1967 e 1968. David Coverdale ficou conhecido por substituir o vocalista Ian Gillan na banda Deep Purple, em meados dos anos 70. Após o termino da banda em 1976, lançou seu projeto solo David Coverdale White Snake, em 1977 saiu o segundo álbum solo Northwinds, em 1977 fundou o Whitesnake, grupo de hard rock/heavy metal que fez sucesso com os hits "Is This Love" que teve sucesso em todo o mundo, "Here I Go Again", "Love Ain't No Stranger" e "Still Of The Night", entre outras.
Em 1991 resolveu dar uma pausa nos trabalhos com o Whitesnake. Em 1993 lançou um projeto intitulado Coverdale-Page com Jimmy Page do Led Zeppelin. Em 1997 voltando com o Whitesnake lançou mais um álbum, Restless Heart e depois fez dois álbuns Good to Be Bad (2008) e Forevermore (2011).
