Ganhou de presente sua primeira guitarra em um natal também muito jovem; adaptou a guitarra a sua maneira de tocar, que hoje lhe é uma característica própria comumente chamada de "lap-top" (onde ele toca de uma maneira que envolve todos os dedos para tocar sua guitarra, apoiando-a em uma plataforma especial, ou nas pernas, onde ele ainda: toca com os dentes, com a guitarra sobre a cabeça, e muitas vezes em pé agitando o público).
Com seis anos de idade já tocava e cantava. Adolescente se apresentava em bares e clubs, e aprendia ouvindo outros guitarristas tocando. Jeff Healey antes de se fixar no Blues tocou de tudo um pouco, como Jazz, Country, Reggae, Heavy Metal, R&B, Rock e enfim Blues. Em uma escola especial para cegos tocou guitarra e trumpete, e organizou um grupo chamado Blues Directions.
Em 1985 lançou um vídeo independente chamado Adrianna. No mesmo ano um amigo e lendário guitarrista chamado Albert Collins "convenceu" Jeff Healey a subir ao palco com ele e ninguém menos que Stevie Ray Vaughan por algumas semanas. O pequeno jovem, loiro e cego, impressionou Stevie Ray Vaughan, que passou a ser um grande amigo do menino prodígio.
Em 1985, Tom deixou sua carreira de engenheiro urbano e Joe sua promissora carreira dentro dos estúdios e se juntaram a Healey. Nascia então a The Jeff Healey Band com Jeff Healey na guitarra/vocal, Joe Rockman no baixo e Tom Stephen na bateria; Healey tinha apenas 19 anos de idade.
Em 1986 ao tocar em um festival em Vancouver com B.B.King, deixou o mestre e sua "Lucille" boquiabertos. Fizeram tour pelo Canadá por dois anos, lançando uma espécie de "demo", antes de se filiarem a Arista Records & BMG Music Canadá Inc.
Seu álbum de estreia foi o See The Light, que já atraia devotados fãs de blues, com notoriedade para as músicas Angels Eyes e Confidence Man. Nessa mesma época Jeff Healey e banda participaram de um filme que lhe deu uma boa ascensão internacional: Road House (Matador de Aluguel, com Patrick Swaize), onde tocava com sua guitarra em um bar.
Em 1990 seu segundo álbum, Hell to Pay, trazia George Harrison (ex-beatle) tocando com Jeff Healey na faixa cover dos Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" e também Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) tocando com Jeff Healey em I Think I Love You Too Much. Hell To Pay é considerado por muitos fãs da banda, como sendo o melhor álbum do grupo.
Fell This, terceiro álbum, vem logo depois com ótimas músicas, ótimas letras. Outra vez um grande trabalho da banda, mas que infelizmente não deu o retorno esperado.
Cover To Cover, quarto álbum, traz covers de diversos artistas, entre eles Jimi Hendrix e John Lennon, segundo a banda o álbum foi uma "expectativa de recuperarem as raízes". O álbum ainda conta com Joe Popper (Blues Traveler) tocando harmônica em Communication Breakdown.
Em 2000, após praticamente 5 anos de espera, The Jeff Healey Band, nos traz "Get Me Some", 5 álbum da banda. Get Me Some, não é um álbum característico da The Jeff Healey Band, mas é muito bem recebido pelos seus fãs, que o aguardavam ansiosamente. Um pouco de Pop, um pouco de Rock e um pouco de Blues, é essa a essência de "Get Me Some". Destaque para as músicas: Macon Geórgia Blues, Runaway Heart , Feel Better e The Damage Is Done.
