Formanda em 1971, a Ruphus é uma fusão de Hard Rock bem agressivo e uma boa pegada de Progressivo. Vocais masculinos focado em uma ambientação mais Heavy e um vocal feminino (poderosíssimo por sinal) caindo para um Hard e Prog mais clássico.
Foi considerada como uma das mais importantes da cena norueguesa, junto com outras bandas do gênero como Aunt Mary, Titanic, Popol Vuh e Ace.
Até o álbum "Ranshart" (1974), eles seguem na linha do hard progressivo de bandas como Focus e Uriah Heep, até que a tendência começa a mudar a partir de "Let your Light Shine" (1976), onde começam a flertar com a música negra e apresentar uma sonoridade que lembra muito os alemães do Atlantis.
Em 1977, com a entrada da vocalista Sylvi Lillegard, se apresentam no Brain Festival junto com alguns dos principais nomes do krautrock como Guru Guru, Novalis, Jane, Release Music Orchestra, Gate e Message. No final da década de 70, lançariam mais dois álbuns, "Hot Rythms and High Notes" (1978) e "Man Made" (1979), até o encerramento de suas atividades em 1981. Fontes: 90Teens & Hard Rock 70’S.
